Technology & Media

It’s typical for a new technology to be adapted within a culture and used to support existing patterns of behavior. With your own relevant examples, answer these questions.

1) What kind of culture influences through technology can you see from today’s world?

Technology that i found from today's world is an instant messenger. we can found many instant messenger such as Yahoo Messenger, MSN, mobile chat and etc.

People are now related to new world generation and based on that, many people use this new modern technology and no more written mail in the letter box.

The disadvantage of letter mail is,the letter could be gone by the heavy rain or windy weather. Even the postman also might be accident in the middle of the roadway or the mailing address could be false or person are moving out.

The best thing using new technology in this modern era, instant messenger could solve all this problem, letter gone missing or the postman even dead by the roadways. people had just to sit down, and open their laptops or even chat in the mobile, like MSN messenger, it can be used on the mobile.

This might help people reduce the burden of wasting our time to post the letter, line up in the long line just to have an RM 0.20 stamp for posting out the letter mail.

2) Is there a possibility to reshape the (new) culture today via new technology, How?

Culture can be changed as it always changing from the old ones to the new ones. As an example the mobile phone. last time we can only communicate through voices and sms. Later on mms came as an easy way to pass picture of us, family and friends to the others. Then, making our life rich of technology, we are now using 3G mobile phone to communicate.

Media Imperialism

The documentary entitled "The Power of Nightmares (Part 3 - Shadow in the Cave)" by Adam Curtis was shown in class on Monday. How do you relate the information given to you in the documentary to the theory of Media Imperialism that we talked about in lecture?

The summary of this video :

In the history of shock & panic on 11 September 2001,
the non-conservatives reconstructed the Islam as the 1st enemy to US nation,
the Soviet Union. The unknown attacked on America make it clear that there are dangerous individual and groups around the world. The nightmare vision on Islamic became real of a vision powerful hidden organization waiting to strike our societies.

The power of nightmares : Shadow in the cave, where US nation believes that the invisible enemy that know their symbol of wealthy down is now hidden in one of the cave in the Islamic country. The head of the enemy is Osama bin Laden from Pakistan. hey started a question around the world, the bring up the main topic of the world, 'what would happen next and does they will capture osama alive''. Through media they play role and spread the news of the badness islamic person through out the world and the islamic now wants to control the large nations in the country.

Tetrad of Media

Using McLuhan's "Tetrad of Media" (see diagram below), choose a medium or media application or tool (e.g. newspaper, books, radio, tv, film, internet, computer games, handphone, instant messaging, blogging, online advertising, youtube, facebook etc.) and explain its media effects? Please refer to Week 9's lecture notes plus your own research to discuss this topic.

Enhance : We need car replace the foots and steps. We need newspaper replace back talked and whisper.

Reverse : Car to foot, handphone to smoke signals, facebook to chatting in cafe

Obsolesces : No need harder work do the simple things.

Retrieved : Sense of adventure retrieved. Car sense of speed, telephone sense of community.

Critical reflection.

I choose car. By enhance form the car, if we had it, we would cut our waste time as we had a speed to go. Car give us speed to work in daily life. Don't need to waste much time on walking home or whenever.
Isn't it cute? Car can take us to wherever we want to go. Put on a fuel and vroom away!

Reversing of a car: all should be tired of walking right now. Foot as the main transport going anywhere.

Obsolesces : Just start and drive. Speeding for more.

Retrieved : Give opportunity open our store and gain more wealth.

Personal reflection of class:

This week of lecture. Thanks by not put the due date earlier than 20th april. LOL :D

Obscenity, pornography, indecency.

Obscenity, pornography and indecency: What are the differences between these terms?

first of all, the meaning of :

Pornography: a description of prostitutes or prostitution. Other words, pornography defined as material that is predominantly sexually explicit and intended primarily for the purpose of sex.

Indecency: regulated in the interest of protecting children from the nasty effects of
exposure that they have seen on media.

Obscenity : The exhibition of an obscene picture is an indictable offence at
common law, although not charged to have been exhibited in public, if
it be averred that the picture was exhibited to sundry persons for
money.
In my own personal oppinion.

Pornography, indecency and obscenity is a same based idea, that is connected to main idea which is moral, sex and behavior.

pornography is where people looked up in the porno web and see such a thing, indecency is the attitude of a person and judge by others either is suits or not. and the obscenity is that applying contemporary community standart and viewing the materials as a whole.

Second way to describe obscenity is a patently in offensive ways, sexual conduct such as ultimate sexual acts, normal or preverted, actual or stimulated, masturbation, excretory fnctions or lew exhibition of the genitials measured against whether the materials is patently offensive by contemporary community standards; that is, whether it so exceeds the generally accepted limits of candor as to be clearly offensive.

Reflection of the class:

There are no classes for this week, but then Mr Radzi came in and talk about our second assigment essay in 800 words. So there's nothing to comment about.
